HOUSING SITUATION

They own their two-room home with a separate kitchen. It is made of cement block with dirt floors and a corrugated aluminium roof.
The house is not finished. It does not have windows or doors, and a wall is missing. When it rains, water enters the house through holes in the roof. There are nine people living in the house: the parents and seven children.
ELECTRICITY
They have electricity connected and pay about $10 US per month.
WATER
They have water connected and pay about $8 US per month.
BATHROOM
They have a latrine-style toilet. They bathe using buckets of heated water.
STOVE
They have an Onil stove that they received in February 2012.
PILA
They do not have a pila. They do their washing at the lake. They could use a pila, but first Mayan Families has to figure out if they have the right type of water connection. Please inquire with Mayan Families for more details.
pila is a large, usually outdoor sink made either of cement or plastic that is essential to Guatemalan life. In this sink, they wash clothing and dishes and store water, and for families without a shower, it is used for bucket baths
TABLE AND CHAIRS
They have three chairs and one table.
CLOTHING STORAGE
They do not have any wardrobes. They store their clothing in cardboard boxes.
BEDS
The have two beds, one of which has a mattress. Three people sleep in one bed and four sleep in the other. Two of the boys sleep on the ground.
WATER FILTER
They received a water filter in September 2012, but it has since expired and needs to be replaced by a 10-year water filter.
CHICKENS
They own chickens, which they sell for meat.
These can help to provide the family with a supplemental income and food.
FAMILY NEEDS
The family's most urgent need is food. They also need:
  • home repairs to fix leaking and add doors and windows
  • pila
  • a water filter
  • a wardrobe

She is attending Caritas Soñadoras, the Mayan Families Preschool Nutritional Center in San Antonio Palopó in 2015.
